About Monaville, West Virginia

Monaville is a community of 302 people in Logan County. It sits in the valley of Island Creek, 4 miles south of Logan, the county seat. Before the coal mines came, much of the land here belonged to the Vance family, and a Postal Service map from the late 1890s shows the place as Vanceville.

Coal brought the new name. In 1912 J.J. Ross, a superintendent for the Hutchinson Coal Co., opened the Mona mine, and the community became Monaville in honor of Mona Wilkinson, whose father was a coal mine boss. The Logan Mining Company also worked a mine here, and a 1918 photo of its coal tipple carries the name Mona Mine.

  • Island Creek's #11 and #12Island Creek Coal Company, based in Holden, ran its #11 and #12 mines in the Monaville area. Island Creek, the stream the company was named for, runs north through the valley to the Guyandotte River.
  • A log schoolhouse savedMonaville's first schoolhouse was built of split logs. The West Virginia state archives is putting that original building back together in the basement of the state capitol complex.
  • Home of the Foster ArmoryThe Foster Armory stands in Monaville, and a unit of the West Virginia National Guard is based there.
