About Monessen, Pennsylvania
Monessen is a Westmoreland County city beside the Monongahela River, across from North Charleroi. Its name combines Monongahela with Essen, an industrial city in Germany. Monessen's history encompasses rapid early growth, elevation to city status in 1921, and the later decline of its steel industry.
- Planned CommunityThe East Side Land Company acquired farmland, laid out streets, and began selling lots to residents and employers in 1897.
- First Major EmployerThe National Tin Plate Company began constructing its mill in May 1897 and became Monessen's first employer.
- Rapid Early GrowthMonessen's population rose from 2,197 in 1900 to 18,179 in 1920.
- Steel Era ClosesWheeling-Pittsburgh Steel ended most local operations in 1986, followed by the rail mill in March 1987.
- 2020 PopulationThe U.S. Census Bureau counted 6,876 Monessen residents in 2020.
