About the City of Montague, Michigan

Montague is a city of 2,417 people in Muskegon County, on the north shore of White Lake. Whitehall sits at the head of the lake, and Montague grew up across the water from it as a village inside the township that shares its name. When a county history was written in 1882, it ranked the two towns right after Muskegon, the county seat, in importance. Lumber built both places, and the writer said they had been thriving in recent years.

  • The lake's first foundry, 1865In 1865 Dicey & Lyttle started the first foundry anywhere on the lake, and they put it in Montague. Fire destroyed the works, the owners built it again, and then it burned a second time.
  • A great fire of its ownMontague lived through a great fire a few years before Whitehall's, which struck across the lake in July 1881. By 1882 the county history still counted both lumber towns as places doing remarkably well.
