About Monterey, Massachusetts

Monterey was once the southern village of a township called Tyringham. The two villages were far apart, so the township split in 1847. Residents voted to name the new town Monterey. It honored the Battle of Monterey, fought a year earlier in the Mexican-American War. Palo Alto and Buena Vista were also considered.

Early in 1776, General Henry Knox passed through the area hauling cannons from Fort Ticonderoga in New York. He brought the guns east to help end the Siege of Boston. His path is now called the Henry Knox Trail.
