About Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania

Montgomeryville is a community of 12,998 people in Montgomery Township, Montgomery County, about 21 miles north of Philadelphia. Before 1814 the spot was hardly more than a place where old colonial roads crossed, at the junction people know today as Five Points.

A village took shape around that crossing, and by 1832 Gordon's Gazetteer described Montgomeryville with two taverns, two stores and 10 houses. The clockmaker George Solliday had opened his shop there the year before, and a post office followed in 1851. Two buildings from that 19th century village still stand on the east side of Bethlehem Pike: the home of the Bender family and the first Montgomeryville Post Office.

  • Knapp Farm, granted in 1682The Knapp Farm covers 80 acres where Knapp Road meets Route 202, on land William Penn granted in 1682. Dr. Charles Moore, a schoolmate of George Washington in Virginia, bought it in 1770. After the farm changed owners six times in twelve years, Abiram Knapp's father-in-law deeded it to him and his wife Mary in 1835, and the Knapps held it for 165 years. It is the township's only National Register property.
  • Specimens for Peale's museumA niece, or perhaps a grandniece, of Dr. Moore married the painter Charles Willson Peale. Her children gathered animal specimens on the Moore farm and brought them to their father's well-known museum in Philadelphia.
