About Montrose, Wisconsin
Montrose is a town on the southern edge of Dane County, Wisconsin, with Basco and Paoli among its unincorporated communities. The Sugar River and its tributaries cross land historically described as fertile and productive. First settled in 1841 and organized in 1847, the town had 1,064 residents in the 2020 census.
- Pennsylvania NamesakeGeorge McFadden proposed the name Montrose, borrowing it from a town in Pennsylvania.
- First SettlersJoseph Kendricks, George McFadden, Elam Elder, and Benjamin Crocker were recorded among the town's first settlers in 1841.
- First SupervisorDaniel M. Holt became Montrose's first supervisor after an election held at George McFadden's house.
- Historic PropertiesRecorded historic properties include Paoli Mills, listed in 1979, the John Fritz Farmstead in 1998, and Paoli's co-operative creamery plant in 2023.
