About Moraga, California

Moraga is a town of 16,870 people in Contra Costa County, in a valley of rolling hills in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Saklan people, who spoke a Bay Miwok language, were the first to live on this land. In 1835 the Mexican government granted Joaquin Moraga and his cousin Juan Bernal the Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados. A historical marker puts the grant at 13,000 acres, and the town carries Moraga's name.

A post office opened here in 1886, but it closed in 1887 and did not open again until 1915. Through the first fifty years of the 20th century, trains of the Sacramento Northern Railroad crossed the valley, and much of that old route is now the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail. In 1974 Moraga Town, Rheem and Rheem Valley joined and incorporated as a single town.

  • A family of foundersJoaquin Moraga's grandfather, JosΓ© JoaquΓn Moraga, built the Presidio of San Francisco and also founded the pueblo that grew into San Jose. Joaquin's father, Gabriel Moraga, was a soldier and explorer who named many of California's rivers, among them the Sacramento and the San Joaquin. Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School carries his name today.
  • Saint Mary's College since 1928Saint Mary's College of California started in San Francisco and later moved to Oakland. It came to Moraga in 1928 and sits just northeast of downtown. In the 2007-2008 school year, the Catholic college enrolled 3,962 students, counting both undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Olympians and an astronautMoraga's notable people include the swimmers Matt Biondi, an Olympic gold medalist, and George Harrison, who won gold in 1960 and set a world record. Swimmer Kim Vandenberg and water polo player Peter Varellas won Olympic silver. The list also includes astronaut Stephen Robinson and the actor and comedian Will Forte.
