About Moriah, New York
Moriah is a town of 4,716 people in Essex County, inside the Adirondack Park, with Lake Champlain and the Vermont line along its eastern edge. When Europeans arrived, Mohawk people of the Iroquois Confederacy lived west of the lake. After the Revolution, most of the Iroquois who had sided with the British left for Upper Canada, and in 1785 the first lasting European-American settlement began here.
Native hunters still used the land in those years. Relations with the newcomers started out friendly, but as settlers spread across the area they pushed the Native Americans off their hunting grounds. In 1808 the Town of Moriah was split off from Elizabethtown and began governing itself.
- Iron from 1824 to 1971The discovery of iron in the Adirondacks set off a boom here. Moriah mined the ore, smelted it and shipped the iron from Port Henry, its lakeshore hamlet. Mining began in 1824 and lasted until 1971, and today Port Henry's Iron Center Museum tells the story of those years.
- Smelt through the iceFor more than a century, people have fished for smelt through the ice when Lake Champlain freezes over in winter. Visitors travel to Moriah to fish alongside the residents.
- A World Series MVPJohnny Podres was born in the hamlet of Witherbee. He grew up to pitch for the Brooklyn Dodgers and was named Most Valuable Player of the 1955 World Series.
