About Moriches, New York

Moriches is a hamlet of 3,026 people in the Town of Brookhaven, in Suffolk County on Long Island. It shares its name with East Moriches and Center Moriches, and all three took it from a neck of land on Brookhaven's eastern side. That neck was named for Meritche, a Native American who once owned it or lived on it.

  • Merquices to MoritchesThe colonial deeds that recorded Meritche's land could not agree on how to spell his name. It appears as Merquices in 1683, Meritces in 1691, Marigies in 1693 and Maritches in 1697. By 1714 the deeds had reached Moritches, close to the name the hamlet uses today.
  • A million ducks a yearThe Jurgielewicz Duck Farm opened in 1919 beside the Forge River, and its 65 acres ran up to the Long Island Rail Road's Montauk Branch. At its height the farm raised one million Pekin ducks a year and called itself the biggest free-range duck operation in America. It went bankrupt in 2011 and shut down that August.
