About Mound, Texas

Mound is a community of 174 people in eastern Coryell County, about eight miles southeast of Gatesville. Settlers came here in the early 1850s, ahead of most other places in the county, so Mound counts among Coryell County's oldest communities. Its name comes from the White Mound School, which was itself named for a white chalk hill close by.

  • White Mound Baptist ChurchThe community's Baptist congregation was founded in 1874 as the White Mound Baptist Church. It carries the same name as the old school and the chalk hill nearby that gave Mound its name.
  • Rails in 1882, mail in 1884Although settlers came early, Mound waited a long time for the railroad, which finally arrived in 1882. A post office followed in 1884. Mound has never been incorporated, but it still has its own post office, with the ZIP code 76558.
  • A school town until 1971Mound was long a center of education in the county, and its White Mound School gave the community its name. In 1971 Mound's schools closed their own district and joined the Gatesville Independent School District, which still serves the area today.
