About Mount Carmel, Ohio

Mount Carmel is a census-designated place of 4,828 people in Union Township, Clermont County, on the line with Hamilton County. It ranks among the oldest communities in the township. In 1788 surveyor John Obannon and his crew arrived to lay the ground for homes and businesses, and most of the early landholders were Revolutionary War veterans, paid for their service with tracts through the Ohio Land Grant.

John Rose, a pioneer from New Jersey, settled here in 1796 and is remembered as the father of Mount Carmel. One historian thought Rose may have chosen the name from the Bible. He lies in a tiny graveyard on Rose Hill, heading down into Hamilton County, and it is the only trace of him left today.

  • Two towns on one turnpikeMount Carmel took shape along the Batavia turnpike as East and West Mount Carmel, built on lots carved out of the surrounding farms. Nobody ever formally platted a village. At East Mount Carmel, the firm of Lane & Richards opened a store many years before 1880.
  • Whetston's stagecoach tavernHalfway between the two halves of the settlement, John Whetston ran a well-known tavern. Stagecoaches pulled in there to swap horses, and long trains of loaded wagons stopped for the night before moving on.
  • Chairs by 30 handsChair making was once a major trade in Mount Carmel. By the 1880 county history, several shops in the community together employed 30 workers.
  • Catawba grape arborsThe Catawba grape was tough enough to survive harsh Ohio winters, and it became a thriving crop in the Ohio River Valley. Farmers around Mount Carmel planted arbors across Union Township, helping Ohio lead the nation in wine production by 1860.
  • A post office from 1887Mount Carmel got a post office in 1887, and within a few years it was renamed Summerside. In the twentieth century the Summerside and Glen Este offices both closed and moved west to Newtown. When the Newtown office later closed too, the nearest post office became the one on Nagel Road in Anderson Township.
