About Mount Gilead, Ohio

Mount Gilead is a village of 3,503 people and the county seat of Morrow County. Lewis Hardenbrook settled here in 1817, when the spot was known as Whetstone and belonged to Marion County. In 1824 Judge Jacob Young laid out a plan of 80 lots around a public square. That December, Charles Webster put up the first cabin in the village, and as its first postmaster he ran the post office from it.

In 1832 Henry Ustick added 70 lots and a second square, so people began calling the old one the south square and the new one the north square. That same year residents voted on a new name, Warsaw or Mount Gilead. Mount Gilead, honoring the Virginia town some settlers had come from, won by a wide margin. The legislature incorporated the village in 1839. In 1848 it became the seat of the new Morrow County, which was formed from parts of Marion, Knox, Richland and Delaware counties.

  • The railroad that went aroundSoon after Mount Gilead became the county seat, there was talk of a Cleveland to Columbus line through the village, and officials began selling stock. Then talks between villagers and the railroad men broke down. The station went to Cardington instead and opened in 1851, with the tracks passing two miles west at what is now Edison. The village finally got its own spur, the Mt. Gilead Short Line Railway, in 1880.
  • The Victory Shaft, 1919In the summer of 1919, Ohio counties raced to sell the most war savings stamps, a way of raising money for the American effort in World War I. Morrow County won, and its prize from the Ohio War Savings Committee was a monument known as the Victory Shaft. A crowd of about 10,000 gathered on the north square for its dedication on December 4, 1919.
  • Two newspapers from 1848The Democratic Messenger and The Whig Sentinel both started printing in 1848, the year the county was formed. Around 1860 the Messenger became The Union Register and the Sentinel became The Morrow County Sentinel. The Union Register ran until 1971, and the Sentinel is still published.
  • Levering HallLevering Hall, with its ornate Italianate design, stands near the courthouse and served for several decades as the center of the village's community life. It joined the National Register in 1980.
