About Mount Washington, Kentucky
Mount Washington is a city of 18,090 people in northeastern Bullitt County, about 20 miles from downtown Louisville. It grew up where two stagecoach routes met, so its first name was The Cross Roads. In 1822 the town was formally set up as Mount Vernon, after George Washington's home in Virginia. Another town's post office already held that name, so when the city was incorporated in 1833 it became Mount Washington, honoring the first president himself.
Around that time the town had about 700 people. It also had three churches, two schools, two taverns, five doctors, six stores and groceries, and twelve mechanical trades. By the 1850s it was the business center of Bullitt County. Its industries aged, and by the 1930s it had lost that lead. Then on November 18, 1940, a fire burned much of the business district. New residents arrived in the late 1960s, after General Electric opened Appliance Park nearby in Louisville. The town climbed from 2,020 people in 1970 to more than 9,000 at the 2010 census.
- Cavalry in town, 1862In the fall of 1862, with the Civil War under way, John Wharton's Confederate cavalry held Mount Washington. On October 1 they fought Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Crittenden's men along Floyds Fork, north of town. After a defeat the next day, the Confederates withdrew from the area.
- Milestones on the turnpikeStone mile markers and the old roadbed of the Louisville to Bardstown Turnpike still survive here, and they joined the National Register in 2019. A historical marker in town dates the mile stones to around 1835.
- A house museum in the makingThe James M. Lloyd House joined the National Register in 1993. The Mount Washington Historical Society looks after the house and is restoring it so it can open as a historic house museum.
- From two rooms to 200For much of the nineteenth century, the town's school was a two-room building at the south end of Bardstown Road. A four-classroom school replaced it in 1916. On that spot, a high school went up in the early 1940s, and it is now Mt. Washington Middle School. Growth forced it to expand in 1995, and it now holds over 200 classrooms and offices. A second middle school, on the other side of the city, was finished in 2006.
