About Mussey, Michigan
Mussey is a township of 4,234 people in St. Clair County, and the village of Capac lies within its borders. It was organized in 1855 and named for Dexter Mussey, who represented Macomb County in the Michigan House of Representatives and went on to serve as Speaker of the House.
- A depot at Capac in 1870The railroad came to the township in 1870. That year the Port Huron and Lake Michigan company, a line that later became part of the Grand Trunk, opened its tracks and a depot in Capac.
- A farm cut from the woodsWhen Christian Wendt bought eighty acres in section 10 in 1863, the land was thick forest full of game and beasts of prey. He was an expert with an axe, and he earned ready money by making staves, bolts and shingles and by cutting timber. Over the years he cleared the whole farm and put up a house, two barns and an orchard.
- Church in a log schoolhouseWendt and his wife belonged to the Evangelical Association for forty years. The congregation first worshipped in a small log schoolhouse and in members' homes. It kept meeting that way until it had grown large enough to build a church of its own.
