About Mustang, Texas

Mustang is a town in Navarro County, Texas, at the northeast corner where Interstate 45 meets FM 739. Navarro County was dry in 1973, so that year two men incorporated Mustang so it could sell alcohol: William "Bill" McKie, who had once served as Corsicana's city attorney, and the businessman Harold "Mack" McElhenney. Its voters approved beer on October 30, 1973, and on March 25, 1975, they voted 20 to 0 for hard liquor and mixed drinks.

The town counted 12 people in 1980, 35 in 1990 and 47 in 2000. In the early 1990s it had several liquor stores and a dance hall. By the mid-1990s other towns nearby had repealed their blue laws, and Mustang was no longer the main place in the county to buy a drink. The 2020 census found no one living there.

  • A sale that went to courtOn June 5, 2005, McKie agreed to sell Mustang for $600,000 to Tommy Sinclair, who leased a club there. The sale never closed, and Sinclair sued in October 2005 for the right to buy. After McKie died on November 11, 2005, his widow Marsha kept up the case. When Angus threatened to cut off water in November 2006 over a $3,400 bill, she paid it herself. In 2007 Sinclair won possession of the town, though not the deed.
  • Two elections in one daySinclair evicted many council members, the city secretary and the fire chief, and the dispute over who owned Mustang led to rival council votes held on the same day, May 10, 2008. The one Sinclair backed chose a mayor and five aldermen, while the other filled three aldermen seats. Just eight votes were cast, six in one and two in the other, and each government claimed to be the real one.
  • Mark Cuban's town since 2021In December 2021 Mark Cuban, the former Dallas Mavericks owner, paid about $2 million for the 77-acre town. Merwyn Price, the seller, bought it with two partners in 2017, and an earlier $4 million asking price found no buyers. Cuban said he did it to help a friend, since Price had cancer and the town was nearly all he owned. A robotic dinosaur plan was dropped in August 2022, and in 2024 Cuban said he had never been there.
