About Naomi, Pennsylvania
Naomi is an unincorporated community of 53 people in Washington Township, Fayette County. The Monongahela River runs along its western side, with Washington County on the far bank, and its nearest neighbors are Fairhope, Fayette City and Lynnwood. Its recorded history centers on coal, because the United Coal Company worked the Naomi mine near Bellevernon.
- 34 miners lost on a SundayOn Sunday, December 1, at 7:40 in the evening, an explosion tore through the Naomi mine of the United Coal Company. Every man underground at the time was killed, 34 in all. A government geologist later wrote that it was fortunate only that many were inside the mine when it happened.
- Studied by the USGS in 1909In 1909 the U.S. Geological Survey published Bulletin 383 by Rollin T. Chamberlin, a study of explosive gases and coal dust in mines. Chamberlin built his report around three disasters, at the Monongah, Darr and Naomi mines, and the Naomi blast was the first of the three he described.
- Down to 53 by 2020The census counted 69 people in Naomi in 2010. By 2020 the count had fallen to 53.
