About Nashville, Illinois

Nashville is a city of 3,105 people and the county seat of Washington County, Illinois. It was laid out in 1830 under the name New Nashville, and when the post office opened the next year, in 1831, it took the shorter name Nashville. The city sits on Nashville Creek, at the head of Little Crooked Creek, which runs northwest to the Kaskaskia River.

The land around Nashville was good farm country that also held coal. By around 1900 the city had two working coal mines inside its own limits, three large flour mills, a State bank, a high school and four weekly papers. Its population climbed from 2,222 in 1880 to 3,084 in 1890, then dropped to 2,184 by 1900.

  • The first millMurphy and Watts owned Nashville's first mill. It stood roughly half a mile south of the spot where the county courthouse was later built.
  • On the L&N lineTwo railways served Nashville around 1900, the Centralia & Chester and the Louisville & Nashville. That put the city 120 miles south of Springfield and 50 miles from St. Louis by rail. Its Louisville and Nashville Depot joined the National Register in 1985.
  • From mine gear to auto partsNational Mine Service Company was once Nashville's biggest employer, and when it closed its local operations in 1983, 240 people lost their jobs. Two years later, in 1985, Nascote Industries opened an auto parts plant that grew to more than 1,000 workers. A second plant followed in 1987 as Ligma Corporation, a venture of Magna International and Germany's Lignotock. Grupo Antolin owns it now, and it had 522 workers in 2018.
  • One truck in 1981Norrenberns Truck Service began in 1925. It was bought in 1981 when it had a single truck and moved to Nashville a few years later. By 2004 it had grown to 130 trucks and 275 employees.
