Beautifully designed. Printed on archival paper for modern walls.
This vintage map of New Bedford, Massachusetts was created in 1871 and shows the City of New Bedford along the Acushnet River. This restored edition brings the historic New Bedford map to life while preserving the original linework and its numbered city wards, streets, shoreline, docks, and offshore islands.
About This Historic Map
Drawn as a detailed city survey, this map presents New Bedford in the early 1870s, when the area was shaped by its Acushnet River waterfront, dense grid of streets, numbered city wards, and island-dotted harbor. The overall view traces the compact, tightly platted west bank of the river against the open water and marshland to the east.
Notable landmarks shown on the map include the Acushnet River, Palmer's Island, Crow Island, Fish Island, Oak Grove Cemetery, the numbered city wards, and many of the historic streets and docks that shaped life around New Bedford in the era.
For anyone whose family roots run back to the New Bedford waterfront, this map is more than a historic view. It captures the crowded wharves along the Acushnet River, the wards where neighbors and generations grew up, and the memories that keep people connected to New Bedford.
