About New Hamburg, Missouri

The Catholic parish of St. Lawrence at New Hamburg was organized in 1848. In 1862, during the war, soldiers burned its massive stone church. Only the four walls were left standing. In 1867, Father John Anthony Stroombergen restored the church, and those walls became the main part of the present building.

By 1941, descendants of German immigrants who settled here in 1846 still lived in the village. On New Year's Eve, masked villagers in fancy dress visited their neighbors' homes. They sang old German songs and were treated to wine and cakes.

  • How the town got its nameNew Hamburg was laid out for Francis Heurig. German settlers named the town for Hamburg, Germany.
