About New Holland, South Dakota
New Holland is a community of 77 people in Douglas County, South Dakota, about four miles west of Harrison. It was founded by early Dutch settlers, and the name was chosen because so many of the first families had come from Holland.
- About forty people in 1886Historian Gerald F. De Jong, writing in South Dakota History in 1974, counted New Holland among the communities started by the first Dutch settlers in Dakota. He found that it had grown to about forty residents by 1886.
- A Dutch paper on the prairieEven with only a few dozen residents, New Holland had a newspaper of its own. W.P. Van der Zalm founded De Nederlandsche Dakotaan, printed in Dutch, the language of the town's first settlers.
- 77 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 77 residents in New Holland, a census-designated place covering about 0.1 square miles. Its children attend the Platte-Geddes School District.
