This restored linen postcard captures the New Ideal Diner, a roadside stop along Route 40 in Aberdeen, Maryland. Before interstate highways, Route 40 was one of the great east-west arteries of the country, carrying travelers through Harford County and making diners like this one familiar landmarks for hungry motorists on the move.
From roughly the 1930s into the 1940s, American postcards entered their celebrated "linen" era, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave the cards their soft glow and saturated color. Many of the finest were produced by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
