About New Lisbon, New York
Artemas Holdredge made cheese in Garrattsville. He came up with the idea of packing cheese in rectangular boxes instead of round wheel boxes. The new shape made the cheese easier to ship and to store on shelves.
The Victor J. Warren hammer factory stood beside the Butternut in Garrattsville. It once employed about a hundred people, and every house in the hamlet held two families. A worker named Anthony Slater was credited with a way to temper cast steel. One Warren hammer is now displayed at the town hall.
