About New Troy, Michigan

Solomon and Hiram Gould were the first settlers. They built the North Mill here on the Galien in 1836. The village was platted in 1837 and called Troy, probably by Joseph G. Ames. Later the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad gave the name Troy Station to a nearby stop. The village then became New Troy. That station is now Sawyer.

Lumber from the Gould mill was rafted down the river to New Buffalo and loaded onto ships on the lake. Later the mill property was virtually abandoned and tied up in lawsuits for many years. The fight ended in 1853, when the Morleys took it over and built a new sawmill on the old site.
