About Newberry, South Carolina

Newberry is a city of 10,691 people in South Carolina's Piedmont, 43 miles northwest of Columbia. German, Scots-Irish and English settlers came into the area in large numbers during the 1750s. In 1785 Newberry County was carved out of the Ninety-Six District, and in 1789 the town was picked as its county seat because it sat near the middle of the county.

The county was cotton plantation country, and planters controlled both county and town politics. When the railroad reached Newberry in 1851, the town had already grown into a busy trading center, and it held that role until the 1860s. Once known as Newberry Courthouse, the town adopted its charter in 1894.

  • Two banks in two yearsThe year the railroad arrived, the powerful Bank of the State of South Carolina opened an agency in Newberry. A year later the town had a bank of its own, when the Bank of Newberry received its charter.
  • A college hospital in wartimeDuring the Civil War, Newberry College treated the wounded, first Confederate troops and later Union soldiers. When William Tecumseh Sherman's army marched through the South, his troops left the Newberry Court House standing. The college remains a private liberal-arts school tied to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
  • A city since 1976Newberry became a city in 1976, but it waited more than twenty-five years to report the change to federal census officials. Because of that delay, the 2000 census still counted Newberry as a town.
