About Newcastle, Wyoming

Newcastle is a city of 3,374 people and the county seat of Weston County, on the southwest edge of the Black Hills where U.S. routes 16 and 85 meet. It was founded in 1889 as a town for both mining and the railroad, while the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad pushed west.

Its founders named it after Newcastle upon Tyne in England, a port famous for shipping coal. The name fit a town that grew up beside coal the railroad needed for its engines, and in 1903 President Teddy Roosevelt paid Newcastle a visit.

“Newcastle, Wyo., was founded around the same time by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, then building across Wyoming’s northeast corner from Nebraska to Montana on a route planned to take advantage of ready coal supplies to fuel its locomotives.”

  • Cavalry stables turned museumThe WPA built these stables for the Wyoming National Guard Cavalry between 1933 and 1936, and they joined the National Register as the Wyoming Army National Guard Cavalry Stable. Today they house the Anna Miller Museum, named for Anna C. Miller, whose husband, Sheriff Billy Miller, died in the area's last Indian skirmish. Its exhibits include a model of Cambria, a ghost mining town, and the Jenney Stockade Cabin from the Black Hills gold rush of 1874 to 1879.
  • The Dogie Theater, 1951The Dogie Theater opened in 1951 as the most modern movie house of its day, named for the Dogie, mascot of the local high school. It stands in the downtown blocks listed on the National Register as the Newcastle Commercial District, and a walking tour links them with the Anna Miller Museum and Greenwood Cemetery.
  • A highway bridge from 1929U.S. Route 85 once left town heading south on the east side of the tracks, then crossed them on a steel girder bridge of five spans built in 1929. In 1963 the road from Newcastle to just past the bridge was moved to the west, so traffic no longer used the old crossing.
