About Newmanstown, Pennsylvania

Newmanstown is a community of 2,834 people in Millcreek Township, Lebanon County, with Mill Creek running along its west side on the way north to the Tulpehocken Creek. Walter Newman and his wife, Elizabeth, came here from Ireland, and in 1741 the Proprietaries granted him two tracts of land.

Newman laid out a town on that land, and the early deeds called it Newbury. Instead of selling the lots outright, he leased them, and each holder owed him a ground rent every year, forever. The Newman family's name is the one that stuck, and the town became Newmanstown.

  • Fort Zeller, built in 1723Pioneers who had moved to the Tulpehocken from the Schoharie valley built Fort Zeller in 1723 and rebuilt it in 1745. During wartime, families sheltered behind its walls. A state historical marker put up in 1947 calls it the oldest fort still standing in Pennsylvania.
  • A schoolhouse from 1810Newmanstown put up its first building made just for a school in 1810, a single story high. In 1827 the building was raised to two stories, and the new upper floor became a church.
  • Growing since 2000The census counted 1,536 people in Newmanstown in 2000 and 2,478 in 2010. By 2020 the town had grown to 2,834.
