About Newport, Arkansas
Newport is a city of 8,005 people and the county seat of Jackson County, on the White River about 84 miles northeast of Little Rock. It began as a railroad stop. In 1872 the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railroad was built through the county, passing within three miles of Jacksonport, an important river town where the White and Black rivers meet, and a station on the new line was named Newport.
Rail service gave the station an advantage the old river landing couldn't match, so Jacksonport's businesses and residents moved to Newport. A line called the White River branch later ran from Newport to Batesville, and the farms of the valley sent out cotton, corn and timber cut from oak, red gum, ash and cypress.
- Litchfield, the first court townOn November 5, 1831, Judge Edward Cross held the county court at the courthouse in Litchfield, a very small town about two miles east of present Newport, where the Augusta road crosses Village Creek. Court later moved to Augusta in May 1852 and to Jacksonport in May 1854, where a fireproof courthouse went up in 1878. Litchfield itself became a farm, and Newport is now the county seat.
- An airbase for NewportAn active airbase was created in Newport with backing from Governors Carl Bailey (1937-1941) and Homer Atkins (1941-1945) and from Congressman Wilbur D. Mills (1939-1977).
- A trade school in 1976In 1976 local business and political leaders cut the ribbon on White River Vocational Technical School, a dream of many people in Jackson County, to train the skilled workers Northeast Arkansas needed. Today the main campus of Arkansas State University-Newport, a two-year college known for training in transportation careers, is in the city.
- Sam Walton's Ben Franklin storeSam Walton owned a Ben Franklin store in Newport before he started Walmart.
