About Newport Town, Vermont
The town was chartered as Duncansboro on October 30, 1802, to George Duncan, Nathan Fisk and 63 others. Its name changed to Newport in 1816. The first settlers cleared land where Newport Center now stands and built a dam and sawmill on Mud Creek.
The village of Lake Bridge, at the head of Lake Memphremagog, boomed when the railroads came. It was incorporated as the Village of Newport in 1868. In 1917 it left the town and merged with West Derby to form the City of Newport.
