About Newport, Washington County, Ohio

Newport is a community of 895 people in Washington County, on the Ohio River several miles upstream from Marietta, the county seat. Settlers from Massachusetts made their homes here as early as 1798, and they were the first European Americans to settle at the site.

A post office named Newport opened in 1815, so the community had its name long before it had a street plan. The site was finally platted in 1839, and the main street along the river now carries State Route 7.

  • A post office since 1815The Newport post office has been open without a break since 1815. More than two centuries later it still serves the community, under ZIP code 45768.
  • Settled 1798, platted 1839The Massachusetts families who arrived by 1798 lived here for decades on land that had no official plan. The site wasn't platted until 1839, when its lots and streets were laid out along the Ohio River.
  • The Carpenter BridgeNewport is home to the Carpenter Bridge, which takes State Route 807 across the Ohio River.
