About Newton, Kansas

Newton is a city of 18,602 people and the county seat of Harvey County, on the east bank of Sand Creek. Its first building was hauled to the town site from Darlington township in March 1870. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway pushed its main line west from Emporia and reached Newton by July 1871, and the town was named for Newton, Massachusetts, where some of the railroad's stockholders lived.

The railroad quickly turned Newton into a busy shipping point for Texas cattle. In 1872 the town was incorporated, and the Santa Fe made it the western terminal of its line and the railhead for the Chisholm Trail. Within ten years of that first building, Newton had grown into a city of the second class, with brick business blocks, fine homes, churches, schools and its own newspapers.

  • The Gunfight at Hide ParkIn August 1871, two lawmen in town, Billy Bailey and Mike McCluskie, quarreled, and the fight grew into the Gunfight at Hide Park. Eight men were killed. Because of it, Newton earned a reputation as "the wickedest city in the west."
  • No buffalo on the streetsSoon after Newton was incorporated in 1872, the city council passed an ordinance that barred buffalo and other wild animals from roaming loose in town.
  • A Santa Fe railroad townNewton served as the Santa Fe's Middle Division dispatching headquarters until the mid-1980s, when dispatching for the whole Chicago to Los Angeles system moved to the Chicago area. During World War II the Navy took over the Newton airport as a secondary Naval Air Station. The Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern in 1995, and the BNSF Railway still runs through town, where Amtrak's Southwest Chief stops twice a day.
