This restored linen postcard captures the Nicodemus National Bank in Hagerstown, Maryland, a portrait of small-city commerce from the years between roughly 1930 and 1945. Hagerstown, the seat of Washington County, sits in the Cumberland Valley of western Maryland and earned its nickname, the "Hub City," for the crossroads of roads and rail that long carried people and goods through this corner of the state.
From the 1930s into the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, printed on textured card stock that gave their colors a soft, painterly glow. This edition comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose images live on today in the Tichnor Brothers Collection. KNOWOL has carefully restored and color-revived this postcard, bringing back the warmth and detail of the original.
