About Niles, New York

Niles was formed from the town of Sempronius in 1833. It took its name from Elder Robert Niles, a former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sempronius. The first settlements in the town were made in 1792. The town lies between Owasco and Skaneateles lakes.

Dairy farming was the heart of Niles. In the 1870s its dairy products were worth more than those of any other town in Cayuga County. The 1875 census counted 1,686 milk cows and nearly 235,000 pounds of butter made on its farms.
