About Norridge, Illinois
Norridge is a village of 15,251 people in Norwood Park Township, Cook County. Together with Harwood Heights, the village just to its east, it sits wholly inside the city of Chicago, so locals sometimes call it the "Island Within a City." Farmers settled the area in the 1830s. Before it had a name, people knew the place as Goat Village, after one resident's goat farm, and as Swamp, because it had no streets and the ground stayed wet.
Norridge began as an 80-acre subdivision between Ozanam and Olcott avenues, from Irving Park Road north to Montrose Avenue. Chicago wanted to annex it, but the Annexation Improvement Club pushed for a vote. On December 4, 1948, residents chose by referendum to incorporate Norridge as a village of its own. In the 1950s the new village paved its streets, sidewalks and curbs and laid storm and sanitary sewers, and it grew fast. In 1954 it annexed the land north of Montrose up to Lawrence Avenue.
- Named by Mrs. LinkA resident, Mrs. Link, suggested the name. It joins "Nor" from Norwood Park Township with "Ridge" from Park Ridge, the suburb nearby.
- Horse country by the forestNorridge sits beside the Cook County Forest Preserves, and several horse stables once operated here. One of them was Happy Days Stables, on the corner of Montrose and Cumberland. By the late 1970s, most of those stables had shut down.
- A flight simulator pioneerBruce Artwick, who created the first flight simulator software sold to consumers and founded Sublogic, is among Norridge's notable people. So is Dino Stamatopoulos, a comedy writer whose credits include Mr. Show and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. State senator Robert F. Martwick Jr. once served as a Norridge trustee.
