About North Adams, Massachusetts
North Adams is a city of 12,961 people in Berkshire County, at the fork of the Hoosic River. Settlement began in 1745 with Fort Massachusetts, a frontier post on the riverbank. The first farmers chose the mountain slopes over the pine flat at the fork, and the village that grew up there was knocked together from so many rough slabs that people called it Slab City. It stayed part of Adams until April 16, 1878, when the old town was split and its northern half became North Adams, named for Samuel Adams. It became a city in 1895.
Mills built the city. Oliver Arnold and Company began printing cloth downtown in 1860, and by 1905 the Arnold Print Works employed about 3,200 people. The company left its Marshall Street buildings in 1942, and Sprague Electric bought them, growing to 4,137 workers by 1966 in a community of 18,000. Sprague's closing in 1985 hit the city hard. Mayor John Barrett III then offered the empty complex to Thomas Krens, who needed room for very large contemporary art, and with more than $8 million pledged by residents and businesses, MASS MoCA opened there in 1999.
“Right at our feet and fifteen hundred feet below us lies the village of North Adams, packed in among its ravines and climbing the slopes on every side”
- Holding Fort MassachusettsIn 1746, during King George's War, French and Native forces surrounded the fort. John Hawks had only 22 men able to fight, and he held out for 28 hours before he surrendered. Thirty prisoners were marched to Quebec, and half of them died there. The fort was rebuilt stronger in 1747 and never came under attack again.
- A tunnel through the mountainNorth Adams was headquarters for the Hoosac Tunnel, a 4.75-mile railroad bore through the Hoosac Range to Florida. Work began in 1851 and moved slowly until George M. Mowbray set up a nitroglycerine works by the west shaft in 1867. The final blast joining the two headings came on November 27, 1873, and trains ran through starting February 9, 1875.
- Shoemakers from San FranciscoIn 1870 Calvin T. Sampson, who made women's shoes on Marshall Street, was fighting the shoemakers' union, the Knights of St. Crispin. He sent his superintendent west, and seventy-five Chinese workers stepped off the train on June 13, 1870, before a big crowd and thirty plainclothes police. They stayed about ten years. The episode broke the Crispins, drew national notice, and is remembered as one cause of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
- Blackinton's woolen millsIn 1821 Sanford Blackinton and two partners built a small mill known as The Boys' Factory, and a mill village named for him grew up around it on the Hoosic. When the Civil War raised the demand for wool cloth, Blackinton and Daniel Dewey built the Norad Mill in Braytonville in 1863. It is the oldest mill complex in the city whose outside has changed little, and it joined the National Register in 1985.
