About North Middletown, New Jersey

North Middletown is a community of 3,146 people in Middletown Township, Monmouth County, on the shore of Sandy Hook Bay. For most of its life it was called East Keansburg, a name that seems to date from 1914, when developers laid out East Keansburg Park just inside Middletown, across the line from Keansburg. Keansburg was then a busy and well-loved resort, so the promoters hoped its name would help sell their lots. The new neighborhood began as small lots for summer cottages, and it became a year-round place to live once highways made longer commutes practical.

  • A clubhouse and beach by 1924By 1924 the people who owned lots in East Keansburg had organized a civic association. They raised its money by selling stock to one another, then used it to put up a clubhouse and fix up the beach.
  • Renamed in August 1987In August 1987 the township passed a resolution changing the neighborhood's name from East Keansburg to North Middletown. The goal was to tie residents more closely to Middletown than to Keansburg, the borough next door to the west. Later that year East Keansburg Elementary School took a new name too, Ocean Avenue School.
  • The old name lives onThe neighborhood's fire company, based inside North Middletown, still goes by the East Keansburg Fire Company. It shares the job of protecting the community with the Middletown First Aid and Rescue Squad, which is also based here.
