About Norvelt, Pennsylvania

A 1933 federal recovery law paid for subsistence homesteads for displaced industrial workers. Over eleven years the government seeded nearly 100 cooperative towns, and Norvelt was the fourth. In April 1934 federal officials bought 1,326 acres of farmland and began building the Westmoreland Homesteads.

Homesteaders raised hogs and chickens and worked garden plots. For most families, this farming did not meet their needs. In 1939 the government approved a loan for a small garment factory in town. By 1940 the factory employed around 150 men and women.

  • The town's signature housesLocal architect Paul Bartholomew designed the community. He laid out 254 lots, each with a simple Cape Cod house of one and a half stories. Locals still call these Depression-era homes Norvelt Houses.
