About Oak City, North Carolina
From the North Carolina Gazetteer: "Site given the name Goose Nest by a Union soldier on a raid. Inc. as Conoho, 1891. Name changed to Oak City, 1905, because of confusion with Conetoe; name selected from a calendar advertising Oak City Laundry in Raleigh."
From the Martin County History: "Martin County has one town that was named for a Raleigh laundry which was in operation around the turn of the century. The town is Oak City, presently fourth largest in the county, which has had three names over its relatively brief history of 80-odd years."
