About Oakhurst, Texas

Oakhurst is a community in the north of San Jacinto County, eighty-three miles north of Houston, where U.S. Highway 190 crosses Farm Road 946. Its name describes the place where it grew up: a hurst, or wooded hill, standing in a grove of oaks.

Lumber gave the settlement its start. The Columbia Lumber Company built a sawmill at Oakhurst in 1899 or 1900, and the young mill town had 116 residents in 1900. Its population in 2020, 148 people, is only a little larger than it was then.

  • A CCC camp in 1933During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps set up a camp in Oakhurst in 1933. It gave about 250 young men steady work along with a chance at schooling during years when jobs were scarce.
  • Born here in 1924W. Marvin Watson was born in Oakhurst in 1924. He worked for President Lyndon B. Johnson, first as his appointments secretary and later as his chief of staff at the White House, and he also served as U.S. Postmaster General.
  • From city to two communitiesOakhurst was once an incorporated city whose limits also took in the area now called Cape Royale. The city has since been disincorporated, and by the 2010 census Oakhurst and Cape Royale were counted as two separate places.
