From the 1882 History of Western Maryland: "Oakland was on the old road from Winchester, Va., to Kingwood. Among the oldest settlers in this region were Stephen Merrill, yet living, and over one hundred years old, and Isaac McCarty, John Steyer, George Loar, Henry Lower, and William White, all deceased."
From the 1882 History of Western Maryland: "The first nominating convention (composed of members of both political parties) for Garrett County met at the Glades Hotel, in Oakland, Dec. 14, 1872."
