About Ocean Pines, Maryland
Ocean Pines is a community of 12,145 people in Worcester County, and it is now the largest residential community in the county. On May 16, 1968, the Eastern Shore Times reported a rumor that Boise Cascade was weighing a land project worth millions in an area called Hog Skull, a short way north of Berlin. The rumor proved true. U.S. Land Company, a Boise Cascade subsidiary, bought more than 2,500 acres in 28 parcels from 25 owners.
Road crews went to work that year, and lots went on sale on July 12, 1968. The Roundhouse on Clipper Lane, among the earliest homes, served as the sales office, and the first house finished went to John and Mickey King. Jerome and Gloria Richards became the first people to live here all year when they moved into their home in 1970.
- Luaus and a paddlewheel boatBoise Cascade had to sell lots in what seemed an empty stretch of country, so it threw Hawaiian luaus, kept a private clubhouse and pool on the beach at Ocean City, and carried buyers out on a double-decker bus and a paddlewheel boat called the Amy Ross. Building moved fast through the 1970s, and in the 1980s and 1990s about 400 new homes went up each year.
- Route 90 in 1969The Maryland State Highway Administration finished Maryland Route 90 in 1969. The new road ran through Ocean Pines and gave the young community a direct way to Ocean City.
- A Robert Trent Jones courseRobert Trent Jones designed the Ocean Pines Golf Club in 1970, and it opened on June 5, 1972. The community also keeps 13 parks, and White Horse Park is the largest of them.
- Run by residents since 1973Boise Cascade formed the Ocean Pines Association in 1971 and turned control over to it in August 1973. In April 1993 the county commissioners created Election District Six to give Ocean Pines its own voice in county government, and in 2018 the community marked its 50th anniversary.
