About Oglesby, Illinois

Oglesby is a city of 3,712 people in LaSalle County, near the spot where the Vermilion River flows north into the Illinois River. Several mining villages grew together to form it, among them Kenosha, Portland and Black Hollow. The town first went by Portland, because the cement made here was like England's Portland cement. In 1913 it took the name Oglesby, after the local coal company and after Richard J. Oglesby, who lived from 1824 to 1899, served as a U.S. Senator and was governor of Illinois three times.

The Kenosha Coal Company sank a shaft here in 1865, while the Civil War was still being fought. Thatcher Tucker Bent later bought the mine and its mineral rights and ran it as the Oglesby Coal Company, and his family took a large part in building up the town. The Marquette Cement Manufacturing Company, which mined limestone nearby, blamed the Bent mine for cave-ins. The quarrel finally shut the coal company down, and Bent sold its machinery to Marquette and auctioned off the farm animals.

  • English lessons for miners' wivesMany of the men who dug coal at the Oglesby mine were immigrants. Mrs. Josephine Bent, whose family owned the Oglesby Coal Company, set up English classes for their wives.
  • Cement from near the surfaceExposed limestone and coal lay close to the surface here, and the rivers offered a way to ship them, so Oglesby became a major cement center. Before open pits, cement was mined underground too, including at the Illinois Clay Products Mine from 1913 to 1924.
  • Coal mines from 1865 to 1930The Jones Mine dug coal from 1865 to 1930, the Oglesby Mine from 1865 to 1919 and the Deer Park Mine from 1900 to 1920. The Black Hollow Mine, a slope mine opened along the Vermilion in the 1890s, fed coal to the Illinois Zinc Company in Peru.
  • The post office mural, 1942In 1942 Fay E. Davis painted The Illini and Potawatomies Struggle at Starved Rock for the Oglesby post office, under the Treasury Department's art program of 1934 to 1943. After its earth tones faded, the mural got a restoration in 1988. Then, in 1993, a janitor objected to the bare figures, so the mural was hidden behind a venetian blind and shown only on request. Residents soon started a petition to take the blinds down, and it succeeded.
