About Oklaunion, Texas

Oklaunion is a community of 88 people in Wilbarger County, about nine miles east of Vernon, where U.S. Highways 70, 183 and 283 meet. The settlement was first called Mayflower. Around 1888 Joseph S. "Buckskin" Works renamed it Oklaunion, hoping to draw the Frisco line here so it would join the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway.

The two lines met at Vernon instead, but Oklaunion still grew as a station on the Fort Worth and Denver City. A post office opened in 1889, when sixty-five people lived in the community.

  • Incorporated in 1928With 400 residents, the town voted on June 6, 1928, to incorporate. By 1930 Oklaunion had a bank, a hotel, a Baptist church and several more businesses. The census that year counted 254 people. Ten years later the count was 223, and by 1950 only 129 remained. The town later gave up its incorporation, but it still has its own post office.
  • Its own schools until 1967Oklaunion's first school opened about 1893. The town kept its own independent school district until 1967, when it consolidated with Vernon, and Vernon Independent School District teaches local children today.
  • Power for the gridThe coal-fired Oklaunion Power Plant nearby was built to produce 650 megawatts. Since 1984 a back-to-back HVDC station built by General Electric has operated here at 345 kV, with a transfer rate of 220 megawatts.
