About Ola, South Dakota

Ola is a small community in Brule County, in southern South Dakota, where the Census Bureau counted 15 people in 2020. Settlers first came to the area in 1881, and by 1906 the place had become a country post office about 20 miles southeast of Chamberlain, the county seat.

At that time mail reached Ola every day, and a stage line linked it with Chamberlain and Bijou Hill. Residents traveled 14 miles north to Pukwana for banking and shipping, while closer to home they worshiped at a German Lutheran church.

  • A stage ride for $1In 1906 a stage carried passengers from Ola to Chamberlain, the county seat, for a fare of $1. The shorter trip to Bijou Hill cost 50 cents.
  • Grocer, blacksmith and cattlemenThe 1906 Polk directory named the people who did business at Ola. H. E. Bairey kept the grocery, J. W. Bairey served as justice of the peace, and O. M. Olson worked as the blacksmith. Henry Keiner and H. S. Willrodt raised cattle for breeding on the surrounding prairie.
