About Old Appleton, Missouri
Old Appleton lies beside Apple Creek in Cape Girardeau County. John McClain and John Schatz founded the settlement in 1824, when it was called Apple Creek. The community later became Appleton, added "Old" to its name in 1918, and recorded 73 residents in the 2020 census.
- Earlier CommunitiesIn 1784, 1,200 Shawnee and 600 Delaware people migrated to the Apple Creek watershed and settled around present-day Old Appleton.
- A Changing NameOriginally called Apple Creek, the community became Appleton and added "Old" in 1918 to avoid confusion with Appleton City.
- Early Mail ServiceA post office had been established by 1876, when the town was known as Appleton.
- Historic Creek BridgeAfter a 1982 flood destroyed the original bridge, the restored Old Appleton Bridge reopened in 2006 and gained national historic listing in 2009.
- County Border SettingOld Appleton occupies the south bank of Apple Creek at Cape Girardeau County's northern edge, with Missouri Route 61 passing to the west.
