This restored linen postcard captures Fort Frederick, the stone fortification built in 1755 in Washington County, Maryland, near U.S. 40 along the Potomac River a few miles east of Hancock. Constructed during the French and Indian War to protect Maryland's western frontier, Fort Frederick stands today as one of the oldest stone forts of its kind in the country.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, printed on textured card stock that gave their bright inks a warm, fabric-like glow. This edition comes from the Tichnor Brothers Collection of Boston, carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back the vivid tones of the original.
