About Oley, Pennsylvania

Oley is a township of 3,810 people in Berks County. For years before 1720, the district of Oley covered most of the Manatawny section, and it was the second name settlers gave to any large tract in this part of the province. The township itself was organized in 1740, when this land still belonged to Philadelphia County, and it became part of Berks when that county was created in 1752.

Its farms and villages kept so much of their early character that in 1983 the National Register of Historic Places listed the entire township as a single historic district. That makes Oley one of the rare places where a whole township, not just a building or a street, carries the listing.

  • Named for a ring of hillsIn the earliest days the district of Oley meant only the central lands, the ones closed in by hills. Because of those hills, the Indians called the ground Olink, and the first settlers shaped that word into Oley. Wikipedia notes the name is said to mean "a hollow."
  • Isaac le Turk's patent of 1712The name Oley first appears in writing in a land patent to Isaac le Turk for 300 acres he took up in 1712. Only two other settlers, John le Dee and John Frederickfull, held patented land here then. Isaac's son John de Turk built the De Turk House in 1767, and a state historical marker stands at Deturk Road and Memorial Highway.
  • Daniel Boone, born in 1734Daniel Boone, the pioneer and frontiersman, was born in Oley Township on November 2, 1734, years before he became a folk hero far from this valley.
  • From Oley Furnace to OleyA post office called Oley Furnace opened in 1828 and took the shorter name Oley in 1836. The village, once known as Friedensburg, borrowed its name from the township. It sits on Routes 73 and 662, where the Little Manatawny Creek runs southeast to join the Manatawny Creek on its way to the Schuylkill River.
