Elkton, MD: On the main road to Elkton, MD, the marriage capitol of the east
Beautifully designed. Printed on archival paper for modern walls.
This vintage postcard captures the open road leading into Elkton, Maryland, the seat of Cecil County, hailed in its caption as "the marriage capitol of the east." That nickname was well earned: in the early twentieth century, Maryland required no waiting period before a wedding, and Elkton , just over the state line and along a busy travel route , became a famous destination for couples eager to marry quickly, drawing visitors from across the Northeast.
From the 1930s into the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave their bright inks a soft, painterly glow. This one was originally issued by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back its original warmth and detail.
A charming piece of Elkton history for any wall, printed on museum-quality archival paper and available in three unframed sizes. Fast, free U.S. shipping. Printed in the USA.
