About Oneida, Illinois
C. F. Camp and B. S. West laid out Oneida on September 1, 1854. Railroad cars began passing the new town about Christmas. On July 4, 1855, between 9,000 and 10,000 people gathered on the open prairie there, where no tree had yet been planted. They came for the promise of a free dinner and a big time.
The Oneida Cornet Band was organized in the fall of 1865. It stayed together without a break in the years that followed. In the summer of 1877 it became the regimental band of the 4th Regiment. By 1878 it was the oldest band of its kind in the county.
