About Ore Hill, Pennsylvania

Ironmaster Peter Shoenberger built three Maria forges between 1828 and 1832. For many years they worked hand in hand with the mines at Ore Hill. The place was famous for more than 75 years for its high quality iron ore. That ore did not suit steelmaking, though, and mining had stopped by 1911.

Sarah Furnace and the furnaces and forges of McKee's Gap all depended on Ore Hill for their iron ore. Because of that steady work, many workingmen and their families gathered there to live.
