About Orford, New Hampshire

General Israel Morey was one of the town's first grantees. His son Samuel Morey saw what steam power could do while working at the family ferry. In 1793, on the river at Orford, Samuel became the first person to show a paddlewheel driving a steamboat.

Orford was first called Number Seven, one of a line of fort towns along the Connecticut River. Governor Benning Wentworth incorporated it in 1761. He named it for Robert Walpole, Earl of Orford, the first prime minister of Great Britain. Daniel Cross and his wife from Lebanon, Connecticut, settled here in 1765.

  • The famous Ridge housesSeven early homes on The Ridge were built between 1773 and 1839. Dartmouth architecture professor Hugh Morrison called them the best row of Federal-style homes in America. Author Washington Irving visited Orford in 1832 and said it was the most beautiful village he had ever seen.
